THIRD MEETING of the ONE-HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-SIXTH SESSION: 1996-97

Living on a Dynamic Earth

Dr. Stuart K. Monro
Principal Geologist, British Geological Survey,
and
Scientific Director, Dynamic Earth

At the Royal Medical Society, Student Centre, 5/5 Bristo Place, Edinburgh EH8 9JL On Monday 9th December 1996 at 7.00 p.m.

The dynamism of Planet Earth is exemplified by the volcanic events, the earthquakes and the floods that take place from time to time. In the eyes of the media these are disasters and for the people involved they may well be. However, from a geological perspective, these processes have been changing the face of the Earth for the last 4,000 million years and are likely to continue doing so for a little longer yet! Often it is these dramatic processes that provide the human animal with the resources that we need to ensure our own survival Planet Earth is remarkably robust. It has stood up to many geological upheavals in the past, but what is its future and the future of the creatures that live on the DYNAMIC EARTH?
