Medical imaging is typically considered a high-tech, scientific discipline, but is also heavily reliant on artistic conventions and techniques dating back hundreds or thousands of years. The interpretation of such images is also more subjective than might be supposed, influenced by idiosyncrasies of the human visual system and psychology. This lecture will examine art and movies from pre-history to PIXAR to help understand the history of radiology and where medical imaging may be headed in the era of AI.
Dr Jackson is a Consultant Paediatric Radiologist, based at the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People, Edinburgh. He is a previous Royal College of Radiologists / British Society for Paediatric Radiology travelling professor, and is the current Chair of the British Society for the History of Radiology. Public engagement has included multiple appearances at the Edinburgh International Science Festival, and an educational video about MRI alongside Basil Brush. His acclaimed book, Imagining Imaging, explores the intersection between art and radiology.
